Apr. 23--Tim Staub will be in the national limelight next month. Staub, owner of Richmond-based gutter-protection company Gutter Genius, is scheduled to appear on the QVC television shopping network at 9 p.m. May 23. He'll promote his company's new Gutter Genius DIY
(for do-it-yourself) product line. "This is huge for me," Staub said. "This is an exciting step . . . and something I have wanted to do for 2 1/2 years."
He hopes to sell 6,750 boxes of the do-it-yourself gutter protection product, selling for $18 a box. Each box contains four 4-foot aluminum panels and clips to hold the panels in place.
Gutter Genius DIY can be installed with a screwdriver and metal snips.
A typical house would need about 140 feet of gutter guards, or about nine boxes, he said. Given that, he would need to sell to about 750 homes to make his sales goal on the QVC appearance.
QVC's initial order was for 4,000 boxes. He can produce an additional 2,500 boxes a day at his plant in South Richmond.
"I have a plant, now I just need the volume," he said.
His ultimate goal is to get the attention of home-improvement retail giants Home Depot and Lowe's. "QVC gives us the credibility in the marketplace and helps leverage us," he said.
Staub had been scheduled to appear on QVC and demonstrate the product on April 12, but that date was postponed by the network.
The Gutter Genius traces its history to the Elko GuttaGard, which was sold in hardware stores. Staub bought that business in 2004 and began developing a better do-it-yourself product. He renamed it Gutter Genius last fall.
